ORDERS TO MARGIN
PROFIT TO CASH
PRODUCT MIX
TRADE ACTION

Ten interim reports offer four different answers: some companies grew revenue while margins and cash thinned; others saw revenue decline but cash recover as procurement payments fell; still others improved both profit and cash by controlling costs, receivables and product mix. To assess the quality of growth, start with the products, then examine inventory, receivables and procurement payments.
Five-step reading framework: First identify where the orders came from. Then examine product gross margins, inventory and receivables, and operating cash flow. Cash flow must be separated into cash collected from sales, procurement payments and tax refunds. Finally, assess project utilization, yield and repeat orders.
ORDERS TO MARGIN
Orders Arrived, but Margins Did Not
Paper-machine restarts, higher sales and growth in corrugated-paper orders can all raise revenue, but costs flow into quotations, inventory and production lines at different speeds.
01 | Chenming Paper: Revenue was RMB 6.865 billion, up 225.90%, mainly due to the restart of five major production bases. The gross margin on machine-made paper remained -9.49%, while operating cash flow was RMB 322 million, down 58.95%. Cash paid for goods and services purchased rose to RMB 6.272 billion, and inventory increased RMB 551 million from the beginning of the year. The restart has translated into volume, but per-tonne margins and working capital are still recovering. [01]
02 | Songyang Resources: Revenue was RMB 280 million, up 25.91%, and the loss narrowed to RMB 29.24 million. Based on disclosed revenue and costs, the estimated gross margin on high-strength corrugating medium was about 0.90%. Overall operating costs still slightly exceeded revenue, and net operating cash outflow was RMB 11.46 million. The improvement in cash mainly came from VAT refunds and site rental income and therefore cannot be explained by sales alone. [02]
03 | Hexing Packaging: Revenue was RMB 5.522 billion, up 7.26%, while revenue from the corrugated business grew 10.52%; its gross margin fell to 10.34%. Cash collected from sales was broadly flat. Accounts receivable and inventory rose about RMB 124 million and RMB 221 million from the beginning of the year, respectively, while operating cash flow fell to RMB 84 million. Once orders grow, price pass-through and turnover determine whether the cash stays. [03]
PROFIT TO CASH
Profit Improved, but Cash Moved in Different Directions
An increase in cash may come from sales collections or from lower procurement payments. The causes differ, and so does the durability of the improvement.
04 | Bohui Paper: Revenue was RMB 9.454 billion, down 1.15%; net profit attributable to shareholders was RMB 77.06 million, down 14.39%. Operating cash flow was RMB 1.621 billion, up 70.76%. The company attributed the increase mainly to lower procurement payments. Accounts receivable and inventory nevertheless rose about RMB 419 million and RMB 289 million from the beginning of the year. After the cash improvement, sales collections and inventory still require monitoring. [04]
05 | Rongsheng Environmental Protection: Revenue was RMB 1.181 billion, up 11.30%; net profit attributable to shareholders was RMB 190 million, up 65.54%. Operating cash flow improved markedly year on year but remained a net outflow of RMB 57.52 million. The company attributed the improvement to higher cash collections from sales; both receivables and inventory declined from the beginning of the year. Profit has recovered; positive cash flow is the next threshold. [05]
06 | Hengfeng Paper: Revenue was RMB 1.386 billion, up 2.42%, while operating costs fell 0.85%; net profit attributable to shareholders rose 17.95%, and operating cash flow increased to RMB 331 million, up 124.39%. The company attributed the increase in cash mainly to lower raw-material payments; accounts receivable also fell from the beginning of the year. Fluorine-free greaseproof paper, coffee-filter paper and other products still need to be assessed through product-level sales and customer adoption. [06]
PRODUCT MIX
Similar Total Revenue, Opposite Answers from Product Mix
Group growth may come from outside packaging, while lower packaging revenue may still accompany an improvement in gross margin. Supplier assessment cannot stop at consolidated revenue.
07 | YUTO TECH: Total revenue was RMB 8.214 billion, up 0.23%, and operating cash flow was RMB 1.553 billion. Revenue from paper-based packaging was RMB 7.177 billion, down 2.01%, while its cost fell 5.17%, lifting gross margin by 2.45 percentage points to 26.55%. Period-end accounts receivable was about RMB 1.003 billion lower than at the beginning of the year. With scale stabilizing, mix and collections explain quality better than total revenue. [07]
08 | Wanshun New Material: Group revenue was RMB 3.741 billion, up 38.93%, mainly driven by aluminum processing. Revenue from paper packaging materials was RMB 170 million, down 23.94%, with gross margin at 19.85%, down 1.15 percentage points. The company said that tendering by individual customers and design adjustments affected volume, while group operating cash flow turned from positive to negative. Group growth cannot substitute for an assessment of customer concentration and specification-version risk in paper packaging. [08]
09 | Hengxin Life: Total revenue was RMB 935 million, up 7.42%, while net profit attributable to shareholders fell 50.49%. Revenue from biodegradable products was RMB 451 million, up 4.81%, and gross margin fell 5.86 percentage points to 23.25%. Cash collected from sales increased by about RMB 69 million, but procurement payments rose about RMB 145 million; receivables and inventory also increased, and operating cash flow fell 56.97%. [09]
10 | Xianhe: Revenue was RMB 6.304 billion, up 5.23%; net profit attributable to shareholders was RMB 540 million, up 13.88%; and operating cash flow was RMB 417 million, up 26.93%. The company said the cash increase mainly reflected higher tax and fee refunds. Revenue from food and medical packaging materials was RMB 1.24 billion, with an estimated gross margin of about 12.22% based on disclosed revenue and costs. Sales collections, utilization at new production bases and product-level repeat orders still need separate verification. [10]
TRADE ACTION
Export Risk Is Moving into Product Scope and Questionnaire Responses
11 | Canadian Paperboard Cups and Containers Investigations: The official estimate puts the market at about CAD 289 million per year. The products under investigation include cups, containers and blanks formed from coated paperboard. August 31 is the deadline to register for the injury inquiry. The official schedule states that the Statement of Reasons will be issued on September 1, while September 8 and September 23 are the relevant response dates for importers and for exporters and the government, respectively. There are currently no provisional duties or findings of dumping or subsidization. [11] [12] [13]
Four Verifiable Milestones Ahead
Today | August 31 The deadline to register for Canada's injury inquiry. Exporters must confirm the participating entity, product scope and status. [12]
September 1 Whether the CBSA's Statement of Reasons expands the product scope, normal-value issues, subsidy programs and questionnaire requirements; Whether implementation of Beijing's takeaway-packaging guide produces genuine SKU changes—a discussion video appears below. [13] [14]
September 2 GB 4806.10—2025 takes effect, requiring food-contact coatings to be assessed in terms of raw materials, migration, conditions of use and declarations of compliance. [15]
September 4 The Canadian International Trade Tribunal publishes its participant list, allowing observers to assess actual participation by Chinese producers, exporters and industry organizations. [12]
Read the Next Financial Report in Five Steps
01 | Orders Identify the product, customer or region from which growth came.
02 | Product Gross Margin Compare the growth rates of revenue and costs, and keep calculated estimates separate from company disclosures.
03 | Working Capital Examine inventory, receivables, notes and the capital tied up by payment terms.
04 | Operating Cash Flow Separate cash collected from sales, procurement payments, tax refunds and one-off timing effects.
05 | Project Delivery Track utilization, yield, repeat orders and whether cash can fund the next production cycle.
Revenue is the starting point, not the answer. Growth that remains must pass through product gross margin, working capital and operating cash flow, and ultimately be realized through reliable delivery and repeat customer orders.
