As "carbon reduction at the source and recycling at the end" moves from concept to engineering implementation, the industry has entered a deep-water area where results must be verified with process windows that can be mass-produced and traceable data closed loops; this logic is also becoming a scientific consensus for the industrial chain to promote circular economy. In the context of the “15th Five-Year Plan” for biomanufacturing of new materials, solid waste recycling and the high-quality advancement of the “double-carbon” goal, the focus of competition in the industry chain is shifting from “material labeling” to “system implementation.”
In the efficient utilization system of municipal solid waste, the key value of "Paper for Plastic 2.0" is that the high-quality paper fiber used in paper-based disposable tableware and food packaging has high-value recycling potential that is recyclable and repulpable; and water-based barrier technology can only be converted into real carbon reduction benefits that can be accounted for and audited without sacrificing cycle friendliness, taking into account both water and oil-blocking performance and production line manufacturing adaptation. Therefore, paper-based solutions for urban applications must meet three points at the same time: lower carbon at the source, verifiable high-value recycling at the end, and optional degradation paths for specific scenarios.

With this industry proposition in mind, the DBC team went to Yichang, Hubei, to participate in an industrial chain exchange event held at the Hubei Weiqi Biological PHA 10,000-ton production base jointly built by Bluepha and Angel Yeast. They also visited the Bluepha PHA 10,000-ton industrial chemical plant for on-site visits and discussions, promoting the industrial application of BIOTEN™ BIOTEN water-based PHA barrier coating in the fields of paper-based food packaging and paper tableware into the "acceleration zone".
At the same time, the importance of original technology in the PHA industry was also mentioned in the exchange. Professor Chen Guoqiang, an important promoter in the PHA field and known as the "PHA inventor" in the industry, has long promoted the development of PHA biosynthesis and industrialization, laying a solid foundation for innovative PHA application products to go global.

Three conditions for water-based barriers to enter the industrialization acceleration zone
Regarding the large-scale application of water-based barrier coatings in paper-based food packaging and paper tableware, the industry chain needs to align with three key consensuses: 1. Stable and reproducible performance: high water/oil barrier, moisture barrier, oxygen barrier, heat resistance, stiffness maintenance, odor and food contact experience and other indicators. It must achieve batch consistency and scene stability, and be upgraded from "laboratory compliance" to "engineering stability". 2. The process window can be mass-produced: the coating papermaking end and the product forming end need to be optimized at the same frequency, locking the scalable coating, drying, forming and heat sealing windows to ensure stable production line efficiency and yield, and truly form deliverability. 3. The terminal path is recyclable and verifiable: Based on the reality of the urban solid waste system, priority is given to high-value recycling routes that are "recyclable and easy to repulp", and closed-loop data is used to verify real carbon reduction - turning green from "expression" to "evidence".

DBC: BIOTEN bio-based water-based system, covering paper-based and dispersion scenarios
In addition to the paper-based food packaging/paper tableware water-based PHA barrier coating that is the focus of this discussion, DBC has formed a multi-scenario product and system solution matrix around the overall route of "carbon reduction at the source, recycling at the end, and optional degradation":
Bio-based water-based coating system product solutions (coatings, coatings, emulsions, and binder system solutions for multi-field scenarios); paper-based water-based barrier emulsions (taking into account barrier performance, heat sealing process adaptation, and reslurry cycle friendliness); seed coating is fully biodegradable Coating (a controllable degradation solution for underground fate scenarios); fertilizer slow-release pills (bio-based coating system, supporting release curve regulation and efficiency improvement); agricultural mulch film full biodegradation system solution (material system-processing technology-application verification integration).
Up to now, DBC BIOTEN series products have obtained more than 20 invention patents authorized by the State Intellectual Property Office. The innovative application technology system supports the continuous iteration of key formulas, process windows and application scenarios, providing a long-term technical base for the industrialization promotion of PHA.

The direction is right and determination is very important: turn the roadmap into a "production line standard"
The value of this exchange in Yichang is not only the alignment of opinions, but also the acceleration of the implementation of China's industrial chain with a common indicator system and joint verification mechanism, and the further upgrade of "unanimous direction" to "unanimous standards" - with process windows that can be mass-produced and traceable data evidence as the core, it will be precipitated into a new industrialization paradigm that benchmarks internationally and can be replicated and promoted, and contribute Chinese solutions to the formation of an internationally comparable and acceptable evaluation system.

Focusing on the series of water-based barrier products for paper-based food packaging, DBC has continued to deepen collaboration with strategic partners BASF and APP Sinar Mas since 2022, anchoring the common goal of "plastic replacement, carbon reduction, easy recycling, and high repulping", and systematically promoting paper-based and The water-based barrier system is industrially verified in the process window of the coating end and product molding end of the two production lines, accelerating the high-value recycling of solid waste resources - making "circulation" not only a concept, but also an industrial capability that is measurable, auditable, and deliverable on a large scale.

The fundamental reason why the "small paper cups, leveraging large environmental protection" we firmly promote can overcome controversy and form a consensus is that paper cups are a "real-life touchstone" for high frequency, high volume, and strong experience. When a small paper cup can simultaneously achieve lower carbon origin, reproducible use experience, and verifiable terminal recycling, it opens up not only a material substitution, but a replicable low-carbon cycle path - allowing "circular value" to change from a slogan to a standard, from an experiment to a production line, and from a model to a scale.
We will use this as a starting point to continue to make the circular model of paper-based tableware and food packaging a model for collaborative carbon reduction in the industrial chain, and export verifiable and replicable solutions to the global market.

In the next step, we will continue to work with our partners to further strengthen the low-carbon attributes and accountability of the PHA bio-based system at the source, and continue to improve the certainty of "source carbon reduction"; at the manufacturing end, unify the evaluation caliber, lock key process windows, and carry out application introduction and terminal verification, so that BIOTEN bio-based PHA water-based barrier coating can run stably and consistently in real production lines, real orders, and real applications, and promote the low-carbon and circular upgrade of paper-based packaging into a stage that can be replicated, scaled, and promoted to the global market.
Use a small paper cup to turn circular economy from concept into standard; turn low carbon from narrative into production line; turn China's plan into globally acceptable certainty.
