What must paper-based food packaging actually do?
Paper-based flexible packaging covers twist wraps, chocolate bars, biscuits, nuts, coffee, tea and seasonings. These products do not share one protection requirement. Start with the food, pack format and distribution conditions, then select a structure that preserves the intended quality. Appearance and a recognisable paper feel are design goals alongside product protection.
Define the food type or formulation, fill weight, pack size, food-contact surface, intended storage period and temperature and humidity range. State whether the pack uses nitrogen flushing, vacuum, a valve or a reclosable feature. A short-use retail wrap and a sealed supermarket primary pack are different tasks. Without this brief, comparing coating names will not identify the right solution.
Match the structure to the food
| Packaging task | Main design priorities | Interface to check |
|---|---|---|
| Confectionery twist wrap | Twist retention, tear resistance, release and feeding friction | A twist closure is not a hermetic seal; an outer pack may provide storage protection |
| Chocolate bar | Fat contact, oxygen, odour and appearance | Creases, longitudinal and end seals, and paper or ink odour |
| Biscuits and cereal bars | Moisture control matched to the intended texture | Crisp and soft products need separate quality targets; crumbs may contaminate seals |
| Nuts and snacks | Oxygen and water-vapour control, puncture resistance | Sharp particles, gas flushing, zippers and the bag bottom |
| Coffee beans or ground coffee | Aroma, oxygen barrier, sealing and gas management | The bag body and degassing valve have different jobs |
| Tea and tea-bag overwraps | Moisture protection, aroma retention and low odour | A barrier overwrap is different from a permeable brewing filter |
| Industrial milk or protein powder bags | Inner barrier, clean opening and distribution protection | Record the outer paper sack and separately sealed liner |
| Seasoning sachets | Aroma, moisture protection and sealing around powder | Seal edges occupy a large part of a small pack; opening features must preserve integrity |
Moisture content and water activity are different properties. Define the food-quality endpoint separately for a crisp biscuit and a soft bar. A single water-vapour result cannot predict either texture or shelf life on its own.
Separate paper, barrier and seal functions
Map every layer from the food-contact surface to the printed outside. Paper provides the mechanical and converting foundation. Grease resistance, oxygen barrier, water-vapour barrier and sealability may come from different layers or a multifunctional system. Record the actual construction rather than inferring it from a product name.
| Comparison | Information to obtain or measure | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Paper and construction | Paper grade, grammage, thickness, treated sides and dry coat weight per side | Paper grammage is not coating weight |
| Grease or liquid contact | Method, medium, temperature, duration and specimen condition | Surface grease resistance does not establish oxygen barrier |
| Oxygen transmission rate (OTR) and water-vapour transmission rate (WVTR) | Method, units, temperature, humidity, test area and specimen condition | Values obtained under different conditions are not a direct ranking |
| Seal performance | Temperature, pressure, dwell time, cooling, strength and failure mode | Seal strength and leakage paths need separate checks |
| Print and odour | Ink system, drying or curing, transfer and sensory observations | An unprinted-paper report does not cover the finished printed pack |
Published industry examples help locate relevant routes. Koehler describes a functional-paper application for nucao chocolate bars, and Mondi describes joint development of a paper pack for Prymat seasonings. These are product-specific references. Their outcomes do not transfer automatically to a different food, another construction or a BIOTEN development.
Observe what converting changes
Rewinding, printing, slitting, bag making and flow wrapping can each change material performance. Select one format and record web tension, web path, friction, dust, folds, seal position and actual running speed. Keep machine settings separate from the conditions experienced by the paper.
Use empty packs first to examine feeding and formation, then proceed to filled trials after confirming the intended food-contact use. Evaluate sealing temperature, pressure and dwell time together, including the failure location after cooling. For powders and crumb-producing foods, observe seals under representative contamination. For valve or zipper packs, check attachment interfaces separately. A successful short run demonstrates that run; it does not establish long-term production stability.
Move from material screening to complete-pack validation
- Establish a reference. Retain the current qualified pack. Change one functional layer or process variable where practical, and identify material rolls, food batches and converting runs so observations remain traceable.
- Test material and converted packs. Compare flat and creased specimens at the intended environmental conditions. Inspect seals, pinholes and integrity after representative handling. Record the method, conditions, units, sample count and decision owner.
- Measure food quality. Use the same food batch and fill weight to follow texture, aroma, grease staining and the food-quality measures agreed for the project. Nuts can consume oxygen and coffee can release gas. A low headspace-oxygen reading alone does not establish the material's oxygen barrier.
- Agree the next decision in advance. Move to a limited production trial when complete-pack performance, food quality, food-contact documentation and manufacturing performance meet the agreed requirements. If a fold, seal or flavour fails, investigate that interface before changing several layers. Accelerated observations require a justified relationship to real storage before they support a shelf-life claim.
Turn evidence into an actionable trial
Use the tools below to record the complete construction, cost of acceptable output, sample observations and the next validation decision. Link photographs and batches to their observations. Agree conditions, acceptance criteria and responsibilities before running the trial. Leave unknown inputs blank and identify the missing information; these templates do not supply universal pass limits.
This guide organises structure selection and validation. Published industry products, company descriptions and BIOTEN candidate routes retain their own evidence scopes. The BIOTEN routes in the linked application cards still require project-specific validation.

Flexible-packaging base papers and confectionery papers
Ahlstrom (Chinese profile)
LamiBak Flex provides a base-paper interface for further functionalisation; confectionery papers address separate wrapping needs.
Ask for: Request the current grade for the intended format and confirm treatment, direction and web-handling requirements.
Functional paper and a chocolate-packaging reference
Koehler Paper (Chinese profile)
The nucao chocolate-bar example helps frame food-specific functional-paper selection.
Ask for: Confirm the selected grade, full construction, pack format and evidence relevant to the intended food.
Product sources
Paper-based flexibles and application development
Mondi (Chinese profile)
The Prymat case is a reference for seasoning protection and filling-line development; tea and industrial powder bags use separate product branches.
Ask for: Specify the food and format, then confirm the product branch, sealing system and actual storage target.
