Water-based barrier paper and PHA coatings: from material to finished pack

Connect coating chemistry, paper specifications, drying and converting with material suppliers, coaters and cup, bag and flexible-packaging applications.

The practical starting point

Water-based describes the medium, PHA the material family, and package performance the complete construction and process. Define all three before sampling and trials.

What is water-based barrier-coated paper?

Water-based barrier-coated paper is paper or paperboard treated with a functional coating delivered in a water-based system. It is a useful process description, not a single chemistry or a universal performance grade. A complete specification identifies the base paper, functional construction, application method and intended package.

Water-based describes the processing medium. PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoates) or acrylic identifies a material family. Liquid resistance, grease resistance and heat sealability describe functions. These terms answer different questions. The opportunity is to connect papermakers, coating suppliers, coaters, printers and converters around a specific paper-packaging task. Buying a finished coated roll is a different starting point from buying a coating for an existing line.

Compare routes by their actual function

Route or term What it identifies What still needs confirmation
Acrylic or styrene-acrylic dispersion A polymer route that can be applied from a water-based system Grade, paper surface, dry coat weight and intended use; water-based does not mean plastic-free
PHA-based aqueous barrier system PHA-related polymer used in a water-based functional layer Public grade identity, full construction and the relevant film-forming process
Biowax or another functional layer A possible contribution to water resistance, grease resistance or surface behaviour The selected product's job and its compatibility with sealing, printing or gluing
Multilayer or laminated barrier paper Protection delivered by several materials and operations Identify the paper, primer, barrier, seal layer and any other component individually

Water-based, bio-based, recyclable, compostable and plastic-free are separate claims. Environmental and food-contact conclusions must match the specific product, specimen and conditions. A material-family description does not establish the performance of a coated sheet or a finished cup or bag.

Write a specification that a converter can use

Specification block Information to record Why it matters
Base paper Grade, grammage, thickness, sides, machine direction and moisture condition Establishes the strength, stiffness, folding and absorption foundation
Functional construction One or two sides, each side's role, dry coat weight per side and public chemistry category Distinguishes print, seal and food-contact surfaces
Delivery format Roll or sheet, width, diameter, core, splice requirements and unwind direction Makes the sample usable on the receiving equipment
Application brief Food or non-food use, contact temperature and duration, storage environment and closure Connects material measures to the package task
Documents and samples Technical-document revision, production batch, test object and conditions Keeps comparison and follow-up traceable

Keep paper grammage separate from dry coating weight, and distinguish base-paper grammage from finished-paper grammage. A supplier can provide public grade information and suitable process guidance without disclosing its confidential formulation. Leave unknown values open; a nearby grade or a similar-looking paper is not a substitute for the selected product's data.

Manage the interfaces from coating to conversion

A water-based coating process involves surface absorption, wetting, drying, film formation, cooling and winding. Set the trial range using the supplier's applicable process guidance. Record machine settings and the thermal history experienced by the paper separately: an oven setpoint is not a measured web temperature. Different polymer systems should not be assumed to share a film-forming window.

Observation Interface to investigate first Initial comparison
Pinholes, streaks or uneven coverage Paper surface, wetting, application stability and coat-weight distribution Compare positions and uncoated versus coated samples on the same paper
Blocking in a roll or stack Drying, cooling, moisture, contacting surfaces, pressure and time Separate unprinted and printed paper before examining heat, humidity and stack loading
Leakage or grease staining after folding Crease, machine direction, adhesion and coating continuity Observe flat paper, creased paper and the finished pack separately
Variable heat seals Sealing face, temperature, pressure, dwell time, contamination and cooling Map a window on the actual equipment and record failure location
Glue or print-adhesion failure Surface condition, adhesive or ink compatibility, drying and curing Hold other variables steady and examine that interface

Define the outputs of a first trial

  1. One explicit application. For cups, separate sidewall and bottom stock, contained liquid and external condensation. For bags, distinguish the face, folded bottom and glue line. For food flexibles, assign oxygen, moisture, aroma and closure functions. “Suitable water-based paper” is too broad a trial objective.
  2. A comparable sample set. Retain the current qualified structure. Fix the base paper, coated side and converting format where practical, and change one variable at a time. Record independent production batches, sampling positions, methods, conditions and units. One visually good sheet does not characterise an entire roll.
  3. A paper-to-package record. Continue material screening through printing, slitting, folding, sealing or cup forming. Inspect functionality after conversion. Locate the first leak in cups; follow grease staining, vapour and closure in bags; evaluate complete packs and food quality for longer-storage products.
  4. A bounded next decision. Proceed to a limited trial when the agreed conditions are met. Locate and repeat a failed drying, folding or sealing interface before combining more changes. Food-contact suitability, repulpability and compostability use different evidence chains; identify the tested object and conclusion for each.

Connect companies by their role

The selected resources below span coating materials, coated paper and paper converting. Jinyinlian's PHA paper information, the historical APP Ningbo trial record and XZX's acrylic-type coated grades have different material and evidence scopes. Ningbo Asia Pulp & Paper and Ningbo Jinxiang are separate entities. A group project does not automatically establish a specific factory's current grade range or supply capability.

Use the professional tools below to record the current sample, package problem and equipment conditions. Align the construction and cost of acceptable output, then agree the next samples and validation decision. This turns a company listing into a focused technical conversation rather than an unsupported product selection.

Products, processes and companies

These selected references show where to continue a technical conversation. Each product statement stays with its named source and entity; listing is not a recommendation or confirmation of supply. Company links lead to the existing Chinese profiles; the summaries below are provided in English.

PHA-coated paper, coating and print conversion

Jinyinlian (Tianjin) New Material Technology Co., Ltd. (Chinese profile)

Public material describes PHA-coated paper. The 28–450 g/m² paper range was supplied by the platform owner on 23 October 2026 and is an enquiry starting point.

Ask for: Confirm whether grammage refers to base or finished paper, available substrates and samples; the earlier public article lists 30–400 g/m².

The stated capability includes information supplied to the platform; confirm the current specification with the company.

Product sources

Water-based coated paper, slitting and rewinding

XZX Paper (Chinese profile)

White and natural-kraft formats support converting trials; the reviewed grades use acrylic and styrene-acrylic systems.

Ask for: Confirm paper, coated sides, delivery format and application data; do not identify these grades as PHA.

Product sources

Packaging board and functional food-board development

Ningbo Asia Pulp & Paper Co., Ltd. (Chinese profile)

Packaging-board activities and a historical APP Ningbo PHA trial provide a route into paper-and-coating development.

Ask for: Confirm the legal entity, line, current grade and sample; a site trial does not establish supply of every specification.

Product sources

Specialty-paper converting and functional food board

Ningbo Jinxiang Paper Co., Ltd. (Chinese profile)

Its profile lists extrusion coating, coating/lamination and grease-resistant board; annual-report records separately identify water-based food board. It is distinct from Ningbo Asia Pulp & Paper.

Ask for: Request chemistry, grade and process documents for the selected board; PHA identity and the exact production line still require confirmation.

Product sources

Functional barrier materials and application support

Solenis (Chinese profile)

TopScreen contains different functional and material branches for application-led selection.

Ask for: Confirm the selected product chemistry, applicator, drying requirements and use documents; a portfolio description does not make every grade PHA.
