BIOTEN ULTRA / ROUTE 03

Special validation for liquid packaging and demanding structures

Ultra places a PHA bio-based waterborne coating into a complete multilayer liquid pack as a candidate functional layer, closing the evidence system together with oxygen barrier, light protection, sterilization fit, edge sealing, package integrity and shelf life.

02 / SYSTEM WINDOW

Define the liquid-pack system first; then locate the candidate functional layer.

Liquid-pack architecture is jointly driven by contents, filling and sterilization process, target shelf life, light and oxygen sensitivity, edge risk and functional-layer parameters.

01 / PRODUCT

Contents & process

pH, fat or protein system, oxygen sensitivity, filling temperature, sterilization route and target period.

02 / LAYERS

Complete layer structure

Paperboard load layer, liquid barrier, oxygen or light barrier, seal layer, print layer and edge protection are defined separately.

03 / CONVERT

Lamination & forming

Coating or lamination, drying, creasing, longitudinal and transverse seals, cutting, filling and inline inspection windows.

04 / LIFE

Shelf-life model

Material permeation, seals, edges, defect rate, storage temperature and humidity and content change are modeled together.

03 / VALIDATION GATES

Close liquid-pack evidence through structure and time.

Material transmission, seal integrity, edge protection, filling process and distribution conditions jointly form the release basis for the complete pack.

Ultra special route: system validation gates and coordinated functions
Validation domainPlanned fieldsCoordinated closure
Liquid & vaporLiquid contact, WVTR conditions, edge wicking, pinholes and creasesCobb describes liquid-water uptake, WVTR describes water-vapor transmission, and container performance is validated on the complete structure
Oxygen & lightOTR conditions, light-protection need, interfaces and defect contributionThe PHA waterborne functional layer is co-designed with dedicated oxygen and light barriers
Seals & edgesSeal strength, seal integrity, capillary ingress, cut edges and cornersMaterial coating, edge engineering and package integrity are closed together
Filling & sterilizationHot or cold fill, sterilant, temperature–time profile and material compatibilityAseptic status and sterilization fit are established through the filling process, complete structure and dedicated evidence
Shelf lifeAccelerated and real time, sensory or physicochemical change, distribution and failure statisticsThe shelf-life model is established on target contents and the complete pack

04 / DOCUMENT STATUS

Project boundaries define performance.

Oxygen-barrier, moisture-barrier and shelf-life results are linked to specimen structure, method conditions, batch, equipment and revision to form traceable project evidence.

ARCHITECTURE

Structure & interface map

Defines each layer's function, interlayer adhesion, creases, edge seals and potential failure interfaces.

EVIDENCE

Conditioned evidence table

Binds WVTR, OTR, sealing, migration, integrity and shelf-life results to test conditions.

BOUNDARY

Compliance & end-of-life boundary

Food contact, fluorinated-substance or PFAS claims, repulping and composting routes each build their own evidence and are consolidated at complete-structure level.

Industrial-composting suitability is evaluated on the target finished pack under EN 13432, ASTM D6868 or another applicable specification; home composting follows its own conditions and certification route.

Start with the complete structure and build an Ultra validation brief.

Submit contents, filling and sterilization route, target shelf life, layer structure, equipment and current failure. The system retains field, topic, route and source to connect research, validation and release.
